October 9 is a holiday in one Spanish region: the Valencian Community, where the date holds particular meaning for residents, according to ABC. More than five million people commemorate it every year, and since it lands on a Friday in 2026, workers and students can enjoy a long weekend away from their obligations.

The observance recalls the arrival of King James I in the city in 1238, an event that brought an end to Muslim rule and incorporated the territory into the Crown of Aragon.

For the day itself, the Generalitat has arranged an extensive slate of cultural, recreational and participatory activities.
