Spain already knows the eight players who will try to return the men's team to the top of world paddle tennis. The Spanish Paddle Federation made official this Thursday the call of Juanjo Gutiérrez for the Doha World Cup, which will be held from November 2 to 7, with Aimar Goñi and Jon Sanz as the last two chosen to complete a list full of talent. The Federation wanted to turn the announcement into something different. Ferran Torres and Fabián Ruiz, world champions with the Spanish soccer team, were in charge of opening and closing the video in which the names of the internationals were revealed. All this accompanied by one of the most recognizable voices in Spanish sport, that of Manolo Lama, in charge of narrating a call presented during an event held at the Cupra City Garage in Madrid. The objective is clear: to become world champions again. Spain has a pending score with Argentina after losing to the Albiceleste in the last two editions. In 2024, the final ended with a 2-1 for the Argentines, who came back from the tie and left Spain on the verge of the title. Now, Doha offers a new opportunity to regain the crown. Six practically indisputable names Juanjo Gutiérrez had one of the most complicated tasks in recent years. The enormous level of Spanish padel tennis allowed us to create practically two teams capable of competing for everything and the coach himself recognized the difficulty of reducing the final call to only eight players. There were, however, six names that started with an advantage due to performance, ranking and sporting moment. Alejandro Galán, Coki Nieto and Paquito Navarro appear on the back, while on the right there will be Arturo Coello, Juan Lebron and Mike Yanguas. Six players consolidated in the world elite and who form the main nucleus of a team that will travel to Qatar with one of the most powerful teams in the championship. The big unknowns were, therefore, in the two remaining positions: a fourth backhand player and another forehand player. Gutiérrez ended up betting on Aimar Goñi and Jon Sanz, two profiles with different characteristics and especially interesting for the conditions expected in Doha. The coach himself explained after making the list public that both fit the playing characteristics that will be found in Qatar. Aimar Goñi, the great novelty The main novelty is Aimar Goñi. The Navarrese continues to take steps forward in the professional circuit and his growth during this season has ended up opening the doors of the senior team. Its power and offensive capabilities can become an especially important weapon in fast-paced conditions. Goñi brings centimeters, punch and a different profile on the backhand, qualities that have ended up convincing Juanjo Gutiérrez to include him among the eight chosen. On the right, the last ticket went to Jon Sanz. The Navarrese, along with Coello, is the other left-handed player in the squad. His speed, aggressiveness and ability to change the pace of games offer the coach a different alternative to Coello, Lebron and Yanguas. The election leaves out players of enormous level such as Fran Guerrero, Javi Leal, Momo González or Pol Hernández, who were part of the preselection of twelve players announced by the Federation. Juanjo Gutiérrez himself had already warned of the difficulty of the decision. The coach has a generation in which the differences are minimal and in which several of those discarded would have sufficient arguments to defend the Spain shirt. Finally, Alejandro Galán, Arturo Coello, Juan Lebron, Paquito Navarro, Coki Nieto, Mike Yanguas, Jon Sanz and Aimar Goñi will be in charge of representing Spain in Doha. Eight players and the same objective: recover a world title that has been resisted since 2021 and exact revenge against an Argentina that has prevented Spain from lifting the trophy in the last two editions.
