Pedro Sánchez has not yet made a definitive decision on calling an early general election, although an immediate snap vote is on his table, according to sources in the prime minister's circle and people who spoke with him during a long day at the Congress of Deputies, as reported by El País. The newspaper says Sánchez is measuring the extent of social discontent against the right as he weighs whether to call elections now.
The speculation followed a line in his address that many in the chamber read as a sign the move was already settled: “Do what is right, because history will judge you sooner than you think and with more force than you imagine.” For a large part of the hemiciclo, the words “sooner than you think” meant Sánchez had fully decided to bring the vote forward imminently, on the first possible date, November 29.
In reality, El País reports, the president is evaluating polling data and waiting to observe the strength of a demonstration on housing before determining whether to dissolve parliament on Monday.
