In Madrid, passing into posterity has little to do with having a street named after you, or with turning up in the crime pages, according to a column in ABC España. Nor does the city grant eternity to its mayors, its presidents or, least of all, its councillors.

One possible shortcut, the piece suggests, is wearing the white of Real Madrid. That works only when the club matters more than your shirt number — a lesson, it notes, that not every member of the squad absorbs before the day he stops playing for the club.

The other routes to a genuine share of the capital's eternity are, in the column's telling, "completely inexplicable". They come down, essentially, to one outcome: that a bar ends up carrying your name.

When that happens, the writer observes, the person in question stops being important, because from then on they belong to something else.
