Yemen's Saudi-backed government has announced the launch of a new military operation aimed at recapturing all territory held by the Houthis, according to The Guardian. The announcement was made even as the group reportedly made further advances on the ground.

Rashad al-Alimi, who heads Yemen's presidential council, said in a statement on Sunday that the campaign would seek to recover the remaining parts of the country and extend the reach of state institutions.

"I announce today the start of military operations to retake the remaining territories of the republic and extend the authority of the state and its institutions across the entire national territory." — Rashad al-Alimi, head of Yemen's presidential council

The announcement followed reports that the Iranian-backed Houthis had cut a vital supply route to Taiz, a city under siege. The group was also reported to have encircled a government-held city.
