A death-row inmate convicted over a shooting at a Texas military base is to be executed by firing squad in a proceeding that will be held in public and carried live, Le Monde reports. The condemned man, Nidal Hasan, killed 13 people in 2009, twelve of them members of the armed forces.

The head of the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth, said the execution would be carried out by troops and opened to spectators, the newspaper reported.

He will be shot by soldiers, as is proper, and we will ensure that the public can attend, that it is public.

According to Le Monde, the most recent military execution in the United States took place in 1961 and was carried out by hanging.
