European football officials expressed deep dissatisfaction with the expanded international break system, which requires four consecutive matches over 16 days, calling the arrangement a catastrophe, according to Roya News. The criticism was voiced during a closed UEFA meeting in Berlin.
UEFA announced it would seek the opinions of its 55 member nations in order to submit a proposal to FIFA to review the calendar, which has been agreed through 2030.
FIFA defended the system, saying it allows for regional tournaments outside Europe, such as the "Gulf Arab Cup" in Saudi Arabia.
The positions set up a confrontation between the two governing bodies over the international match calendar, with UEFA pressing for changes and FIFA highlighting opportunities beyond Europe.
