Tunisian President Kais Saied on Wednesday softened the penalties set out in a cybercrime decree that human rights organizations had described as a tool for silencing dissent, according to Reuters.
The decision amounts to an unusual reversal for Saied, who has tightened his hold over large parts of Tunisia's political system since 2021.
It was announced only hours after civil society organizations, with the UGTT union at the head, said they would stage a large nationwide march against what they regard as restrictions on rights and freedoms.
Reuters correspondent Tarek Amara reported the development from Tunis.
