Beyond the debuts of Xavi Hernández, Jürgen Klopp or Jorge Jesús, the first day of the 2026-27 Nations League left an image that is already circulating around the world this Friday. It is the expulsion of Israeli striker Saied Abu Farchi for celebrating his goal against Austria with a gesture that the referee interpreted as a shot. It happened in the 55th minute of the clash between Austria and Israel at the Raiffeisen Arena in Linz in the premiere of group G of the Nations League. It was at that moment, after Abu Farchi scored with a header, that his celebration ended up costing him expulsion. Romano Schmid, from the penalty spot, had opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, so Abu Farchi's header meant the tie. Hence the joy of the Israeli, who after celebrating with his teammates went to the corner to take the flag and use it in a peculiar way. In response to the usual celebration of the footballer, who is only 20 years old, his gesture imitated that of a blow with a pool cue. This is what it looks like if you look at the player's most advanced hand, placed as is usually done on the table mat. However, for the referee the interpretation was different: that of a shot with a firearm. Perhaps that is why the Bulgarian referee Georgi Kabakov, who had already cautioned Abu Farchi four minutes earlier, showed him a second yellow card for the celebration, with the subsequent red card that sent him to the shower and left Israel with 10 players. Despite being left with one less player, the Hebrew team held out the result almost until the end, but in the 90th minute Phillipp Mwene made it 2-1 for Austria after taking advantage of a cross from Paul Wanner. Sasa Kalajdzic scored the third goal in added time with a close-range shot.
