The energy management of Pedro Sánchez's second legislature has been shaped by the blackout of 28 April 2025, the day the Iberian Peninsula went dark for almost an entire day, according to the Spanish outlet ABC. ABC describes the date as one that will remain in Spain's history.

The episode, the outlet adds, set off warnings about the condition of Spain's power infrastructure. According to ABC, it will take years before it is known who bears direct responsibility for what happened.

The executive has had two ministers at the energy helm, both of them deputy prime ministers, working from the same green agenda, the outlet reports. Teresa Ribera held the post from July 2023 until November 2024, when she was succeeded by her own secretary of state.

ABC also reports that the government has placed the electricity networks on maximum alert and is bringing nuclear energy back.
