A large majority of leaders in Spain's Socialist Party and of its members in the government have concluded that the best option is to bring the general election forward to Nov. 29, the earliest date available, according to El País. Almost everyone in contact with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is encouraging him to do so, the newspaper reports, citing multiple sources.
Sánchez has been engaged in a long round of calls that began Thursday afternoon, when those closest to him started to learn that Junts would bring down the decrees. The consultations over a possible early election intensified on Friday and continued on Saturday, El País says.
As is his custom, Sánchez listens without sharing his own position with anyone, so a surprise always remains possible. Even so, most of the ministers and party figures consulted believe he will end up announcing the election call on Monday, according to the report.
An early vote is described as the most probable option, though some believe further decrees should first be pushed through.
