President Pedro Sánchez is weighing whether to bring general elections forward, a prospect that, according to El País, electrified an extraordinary plenary session of Congress.

A right-wing majority formed by the PP, Vox and Junts defeated two decrees containing urgent measures on housing. What was supposed to be a debate on the proposals the government had negotiated in reply to the social explosion of the past week was reduced to a confrontation of slogans, the newspaper reported.

In an unannounced intervention, Sánchez predicted that the parties voting against the measures would receive society's punishment "sooner than they think and more forcefully than they imagine."

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the PP leader, answered outside the chamber: "I accept the challenge." According to El País, the session amounted to a rehearsal for an election campaign, even though Parliament has not been dissolved and no date has been set for a call to the polls.
