A protest that started over the high cost of buying and renting homes, set off by the eviction of Maricarmen Abascal, has been taken over by an array of radical groups at the Puerta del Sol encampment, according to ABC España. The Sindicato de Inquilinas de Madrid, which had been leading the camp, has been pushed aside.

Nearly 40 organizations are now involved, ABC reported. Among them, the outlet highlighted Samidoun, described as a solidarity network for Palestinian prisoners that backs Hamas and that disrupted the Vuelta a España in its final stage in September 2025.

The mix also includes the Coordinadora Antifascista, which the paper calls very aggressive and active since the 15-M movement; radical anarcho-ecologists; hackers; and squatted houses.

The newspaper framed the takeover in its headline with the phrase "They want the streets to burn."
