Pope Leo XIV spoke about the Maricarmen case during a flight to Rome, taking a question from a Spanish journalist, according to the Spanish outlet ABC España.
The pope had just replied to a question on whether he had intervened in politics, an accusation levelled at him by some French press. Turning to Maricarmen, he told the Spanish reporter, "I don't know the one you are referring to", while insisting that fair solutions must be found so that such a situation does not arise.
In Spain, the spokesman for the bishops said the members of the Permanent Commission, who spent two days meeting in Madrid, did not carry the Maricarmen matter on their agenda, nor the Ceuta matter, presenting this "just as it is".
In its column, ABC España treats the Maricarmen episode as the starting signal for an election campaign for which no date has been set.
