Close to 1,500 Myanmar nationals who had been living in Malaysia were brought back to their war-torn homeland on Sunday, a Myanmar Navy official said, under a repatriation scheme that has not been publicly detailed.
The officer, whom AFP kept unidentified because he is not permitted to speak with journalists, said three ships transporting the migrants all reached the Myanmar Navy base in Thanlyin shortly before 7:30 a.m., or 0100 GMT.
Hundreds of families turned out at dawn outside the base to pick up their relatives, according to the report published by Arab News.
Return amid conflict
The migrants were sent back to a country described in the reporting as war-torn, with the terms of the repatriation process remaining opaque.
