New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced Thursday that she is appointing state Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor to look into an alleged gang-rape at Cornell University, according to The Guardian US. The move follows recent scrutiny of how the university conducted its own investigation in 2024.
"The young woman at the center of this case deserves to know that every fact will be examined and justice pursued," Hochul said in a statement.
The governor said the appointment would place the matter beyond any conflict or bias, adding that it will be "fully and thoroughly investigated" and handled independently "with the rigor that this matter demands."
