African leaders will convene in Egypt on Friday for a three-day business gathering, the first edition of the Alamein Africa Forum, Al-Monitor reported.

Cairo is presenting the summit as a way to strengthen its standing on the continent, where China and Gulf states — the United Arab Emirates in particular — have become influential players.

Egypt's diplomacy has long centered on the Middle East and the Mediterranean, and the government is now seeking to rebuild its weight within Africa, according to Al-Monitor.
