Cilia Flores, the wife of ousted Venezuelan ruler Nicolás Maduro and a former first lady of the country, is scheduled to appear Thursday before the federal court in New York handling her case in order to request house arrest on health grounds, El País reported.
The court is trying her on narcoterrorism and other charges, according to the Spanish newspaper.
At the hearing, the judge is to hear arguments and then decide whether Flores remains held at the Brooklyn detention facility or is released on bail.
El País also cited a CNN report aired Wednesday saying that new charges may be filed against both Flores and Maduro over the detention and alleged torture of more than a dozen US citizens during the period when they were in power, with those counts described as a further shadow hanging over the proceedings.
