A Canadian army operation carried out in September in the Far North, named Nanook-Nunakput, fell well short of the demonstration of force that had been promised, according to the French daily Le Monde. The exercise instead brought into focus how complicated it is to defend an Arctic expanse as large as the European Union.

That same northern territory nonetheless sits at the heart of Ottawa's strategic ambitions, Le Monde reported.
