The American actress Susan Sarandon was arrested this Thursday by the New York Police Department (NYPD) during a demonstration against the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, within the framework of the celebration of the United Nations General Assembly this week. Images from the AFP news agency show how New York Police officers handcuff the protagonist of 'Thelma and Louise' while the Israeli leader participated in the UN General Assembly, where he has defended his country's actions in the conflicts in the Middle East. Also present at the protests was the actress Hannah Einbinder, from the series 'Hacks', who has also been removed by the authorities from this demonstration organized by Jewish Voice for Peace, according to the local newspaper 'New York Post'. The protesters, carrying banners with slogans such as "Stop arming Israel" and "End the genocide", participated in a sit-in while Netanyahu gave his speech at the UN. A spokeswoman for the New York Police Department said that officers had responded after receiving reports of an "unauthorized demonstration" in which several people were blocking an intersection. "Members of the NYPD's Community Affairs Bureau issued warnings and advised participants to leave. They continued to block the crossing. "Several people who did not comply with the order were arrested," the spokesperson stated. Sarandon is a regular at demonstrations against Israel's war in Gaza, a position that, as she has publicly acknowledged, has caused her to lose contracts. Inside the General Assembly, dozens of representatives from around the world left the room as Netanyahu began his speech, in which he lashed out at both enemies and allies who have clashed with him in recent months, including the United Kingdom and France, which have recently taken steps to recognize the State of Palestine. «They accuse Israel, tiny Israel, of colonialism... What colonialism. And who accuses us? Among them are people from Great Britain and France. "For the love of God, they invented the term," he stated before the Assembly.
