Alberto Núñez Feijóo's Popular Party has for some time been eager for an election and is indifferent to the date, according to sources in his team cited by El País. Those sources say the party is convinced that this time the failure seen in July 2023 cannot be repeated, and that Pedro Sánchez can only fare worse whatever option he takes.
In public, the PP leader presents himself as ready and prepared, almost impatient to demand the vote "as soon as possible", a demand El País describes as set to be virtually the only slogan of his program over the coming weeks. Behind closed doors, however, he asks for caution.
People around Feijóo have begun filling in possible line-ups for a government. They concede that he lacks a team, above all for the large state ministries such as Foreign Affairs, Defence and Interior, but they predict those vacancies would be covered by figures drawn from the elite corps once he is in a position to govern.
The outlet reports that the party's confidence in victory has not stopped its leaders from openly recognising their weaknesses in the Interior and Foreign Affairs portfolios.
