Dozens of people from radical groups, among them the Coordinadora Antifascista de Madrid and other anarchist organisations, began camping in Madrid's Puerta del Sol after a peaceful demonstration through the city centre, according to ABC España. Some carried banners supporting squatting.
The largest group belongs to the Sindicato de Inquilinas de Madrid, which ABC says has led the campaign since the eviction of an elderly woman, Maricarmen Abascal, last Wednesday on Calle del Alcalde Sainz de Baranda in the Retiro district.
Some of the ultra-left participants picked up stones and rubble on the way to Puerta del Sol, anticipating that the National Police would evict them by force.
