Oksana Brovko, who directs the Association of Independent Journalists of Ukraine, has managed to keep 150 local media outlets active in the country despite the severe impact of the Russian invasion that began in February 2022, ABC España reports.
Most of those outlets are small operations with very limited resources, yet they are described as essential for readers trying to find their way through an extremely grave situation. Their journalists cover the war while coping with personal circumstances at their limits and with a punishing economic climate.
To keep the newsrooms going, Brovko obtained international financing for them along with insurance, computers, cameras, premises, helmets, body armour, telephones and electric generators.
Her work marks a shift from dealing with the standard troubles of a sector in turmoil to defending the survival of journalism in the middle of a war.
