North Korea fired at least one ballistic missile on Saturday, according to the South Korean military, which said its forces tracked the projectile heading out over the sea. ABC España reported the launch based on the announcement from Seoul.
"Our armed forces detected a ballistic missile launched from the Wonsan region, in North Korea, in the direction of the East Sea," the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul said, using the Korean name for the sea that Japan calls the Sea of Japan.
The firing followed by one day a sharp verbal attack from Pyongyang, which branded the South "despicable" for pressing for an apology over a mine explosion inside the demilitarized zone along the border, an incident that left three South Korean soldiers wounded.
North Korea has denied any role in the blast in the 250-kilometer-long security strip that has divided the peninsula.
