An earthquake measuring magnitude 5.9 struck close to the Kuril Islands, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), as reported by Kommersant.

The centre's specialists had at first put the strength of the shaking at magnitude 5.8, before the estimate was adjusted to 5.9.
