Rising interest in self-care and in physical and mental wellbeing has driven many people to turn to supplements, and magnesium has become one of the most requested, particularly among those looking to ease tiredness, everyday stress or muscle fatigue, ABC España reports.

Even so, the ANIBES study carried out by the Spanish Nutrition Foundation (FEN) found that eight out of every ten Spaniards do not reach the recommended daily intake of the mineral, according to the outlet.

The same research indicates that three in four people do not take magnesium supplements on a regular basis, despite the mineral's part in central bodily functions such as muscle and nerve activity and energy metabolism.

A pharmacist's advice, highlighted by ABC, centres on making sure the body actually absorbs the magnesium taken, an issue the article raises alongside the widening gap between demand for the supplement and habitual use.
