Justin Gaethje has opened the door to walking away from mixed martial arts after finally capturing the UFC lightweight title, according to ABC España. The American, known in the cage as "The Highlight", won the 155-pound belt at an event staged at the White House, which the outlet describes as the biggest event in the history of combat sports.
He took the title from Ilia Topuria, one of the UFC's biggest stars of the past decade, handing "El Matador" his first defeat in a fight ABC España says will be remembered for years.
"No necesito volver a pelear" — "I don't need to fight again" — Justin Gaethje said, according to the ABC España report.
The report says Gaethje is now enjoying the life of a champion after years of chasing the belt in what it calls the toughest division in UFC history, with business ventures, sponsorships and interviews. His immediate future remains uncertain, but he has already left the door open to retiring from MMA.
