A flydubai service travelling from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates to Israel was forced into an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia after an apparent brawl between its pilots, according to The Guardian.
Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said that one of the pilots stabbed his co-pilot and seemed to try to bring the aircraft down. Israeli officials said they were examining whether the episode constituted an attempted terror attack aimed at Israelis.
Per The Guardian, the plane was over Jordan when it turned towards Tabuk airport in the north-west of Saudi Arabia and sent three emergency signals, one of which pointed to a possible case of unlawful interference. It lost roughly 16,000 feet in the space of two minutes during the reported fight.
Israeli officials launched fighter jets, alarmed by the prospect of a hijacking of an aircraft carrying dozens of Israelis, before the plane touched down in Saudi Arabia.
The BBC reported, citing officials, that both the captain and the first officer were hurt and that one pilot has been arrested. The New York Times said all passengers were safe.
