A record 52 percent of Europe endured intense heat stress over the summer, the European Union's climate monitor said Friday, according to France 24 English.

The monitor reported that climate change drove widespread heatwaves across the continent and pointed to tens of thousands of excess deaths.

It was Europe's third warmest summer on record, while western Europe saw its hottest, and several countries registered their highest national temperatures, the monitor said.
