A Philippine mother's three-year-old son became ill days after he received a shot during a national vaccination drive, and his photograph quickly circulated on Facebook alongside assertions that the inoculation had caused his death, according to Arab News.
Physicians determined there was no connection between the boy's condition and the measles-rubella vaccine, and he went on to make a complete recovery. By that point, however, his picture had already been used in anti-vaccine videos that drew hundreds of thousands of views.
"I felt like crying," Jenette Torres Odena told AFP.
The episode illustrates how online anti-vaccine content in the Philippines has drawn on parents' fears surrounding inoculation campaigns, turning individual health scares into widely shared material.
