A volunteer diver, Elizaveta Bodrova, was eager to descend into the cold water of Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan, where the remains of a city that once thrived lie submerged, Arab News reports.

The settlement at Toru-Aygyr stood along an ancient trading corridor between China and Europe. Much about its past remains obscure, including how it came to be underwater an estimated 800 years ago.

Bodrova is working alongside a team of about 20 scientists at the site, according to Arab News.
