Until last Wednesday there was little argument about Spain's leading political subject: immigration, all the more so with Ceuta raw and bleeding, El País reports. When the focus did move, it went to corruption, usually in cases touching the PSOE.
Then came what the newspaper describes as a script twist. The eviction of Maricarmen set off a demonstration that turned into an encampment in Madrid's Puerta del Sol, echoed in Barcelona, Sevilla and Málaga, in a mobilisation that has not eased.
The pressure drove the Government to send two decrees to Congress on an urgent basis. On Friday, both went down to defeat, according to El País.
The paper reports a circulating hypothesis that Pedro Sánchez could bring elections forward and campaign with housing as his banner, after the PP, Vox and Junts rejected the Government's measures.
El País notes that public opinion tilts left on housing, in contrast with immigration. Two researchers cited by the paper agree that the Government's forces have seized the initiative, but also that they expose themselves to paying for the absence of a record of success.
