At Spain's Congress on Friday, it was politicians who put the questions to journalists rather than the other way round, a reversal that El País presented as evidence of the uncertainty filling the Carrera de San Jerónimo building. According to the newspaper, that unease was present both before and after Junts inflicted what it called the "political assassination" of the Government.

The dispute centred on emergency decrees intended to soften the effects of a runaway rise in housing prices, El País reported.

The Government's partners now read the moment as the close of the parliamentary term, according to the paper's account, though they do not all favour going to the polls. The left, for its part, has neither a leader nor an electoral alliance settled and is seeking to gain time.
