Spain's prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, has activated an early general election, a step El Mundo frames as a last maneuver aimed at survival by holding on to about 30% of the vote.

According to the newspaper, Sánchez made the move after taking in the dominant sentiment within both the PSOE and the government, and he is confident that, despite what the surveys indicate, there is a contest to be had with the PP at the polls.

"¡Somos más! ¡Sí se puede!"

El Mundo carried that rallying cry in its account of the announcement.
