Princess Firyal Irshaid of Jordan, 81, is in the midst of a trial in London after discovering that her jewels had been put up for auction without her knowledge, according to ABC España.
The piece that set off the alarm in November 2020 was her engagement ring from her marriage to the late Prince Muhammad bin Talal, the second son of King Talal of Jordan. Pierre Jeannet, a partner at the JAR jewellery house that had made the sapphire and diamond ring, contacted her on the 21st of that month after coming across the ring in the magazine of the Canterbury Auction Galleries. He asked whether she had decided to sell it; the princess replied, surprised, that she did not know what he was talking about.
"He told me that my ring, specially made for my engagement, was the cover of a catalogue at an auction house," the widow told the court, which is finally hearing the case six years on.
"I thought it was strange, but I accepted it," she said, according to ABC España.
She also recalled that in March 2020 she left her home in Belgravia, an upmarket district of the British capital, because of the threat of lockdown.
