A Palestinian former careers adviser at Sydney Girls High School has lodged a racial discrimination case in the federal court against the state of New South Wales, according to Guardian Australia.
Wasim El-Haj alleges the school's then acting principal told him in 2024 to stop wearing a keffiyeh, describing it as a symbol seen as one of conflict that "may cause discord". Sydney Girls High School is an inner-city selective government school.
El-Haj alleges the state's conduct is unlawful because it breaches the Racial Discrimination Act.
