Rage rooms where paying customers destroy televisions, microwaves, laptops and glass have sprung up in Madrid. According to ABC España, hundreds of people have paid this year to spend half an hour breaking objects in a room using an iron bar or a hammer.
For the vast majority, the newspaper reports, the motive is the same: releasing the stress of daily life. Where some people turn to meditation, sport or squeezing a ball while controlling their breathing, others channel their frustration by stomping on televisions and microwaves or hurling glass bottles.
"There are those who come on the recommendation of their therapist or to release tension, but there are others who simply do it for fun," Andrea Quesada, owner of Rompe Madrid, told ABC España.
