Republican congressman John James sought to create some distance between himself and President Trump during the first debate of Michigan's governor race, NBC News reported.
Democrat Jocelyn Benson, his opponent, returned to the connection again and again, working to tie James — a congressman backed by Trump — to the president during the showdown.
The debate was the first of the campaign between the two candidates ahead of the November election.
