An Iranian court has upheld a sentence of 74 lashes against the singer Parastoo Ahmadi, imposed over a performance she gave without a hijab, in a case tied to Iran's crackdown on women who flout the hijab law, the Guardian reported.
In June, Ahmadi, 29, and eight people from her production team, musicians among them, were sentenced by a court in the city of Qom, according to the Guardian. The case centred on a concert streamed online in 2024 that went viral and drew millions of views.
The court found that the group had breached the country's "legal and cultural norms" and described the performance as "obscene and vulgar".
The decision to keep the punishment in place drew outrage from rights groups, which called it "a form of torture".
