Officers from the Guardia Civil's Madrid and Guadalajara commands have recovered almost three tonnes of cocaine from a rural house, according to ABC España. Eight people were arrested in the operation.

The search also turned up four assault rifles, the newspaper reported. Information gathered at the start of the investigation had allowed officers to narrow down the whereabouts of an industrial warehouse, ABC said.

According to the outlet, the property belonged to a drug-trafficking organisation whose operations stretch both within Spain and beyond its borders, and the house was used to hold the narcotics — a role the paper described as a "guardería", or nursery, for the stash.

ABC noted that rural homes, usually quiet and isolated retreats cut off from built-up areas, offered the network the privacy it wanted for storing the shipment.
