A prosecutor in an upstate New York county has revived a probe into the alleged 2024 sexual assault of a female Cornell University student at a fraternity house, ABC News reported. The office had previously closed the matter.
Prosecutors said the investigation was reopened following public anger over the "leniency" they say was extended to seven members of the Chi Phi fraternity who were named as the perpetrators, according to The Guardian US. The decision was announced on Monday.
Attorneys for the student, who sued both the university and the men she accuses in a civil complaint filed earlier in September, said only two Chi Phi members were expelled after the incident in October 2024.
The student says she was drugged and then raped repeatedly across a period of seven hours. Public reaction has intensified since the lawsuit became public.
