Britain's government announced on Sunday that it will abandon heavily criticized plans that would have ended jury trials for defendants facing less serious criminal charges. The reversal followed sustained criticism of the proposals from many lawyers and politicians.

Andy Burnham, the prime minister since July, dropped the policy of his predecessor, Keir Starmer.

The decision comes as hundreds of prisoners have been freed early to keep prisons from becoming full, one part of a crisis in the criminal justice system.
